Show trailer

On the Monday after the show, I was given all the footage and audio that Steve Davis had mixed from the show and had three days to create a trailer for the show, although in my research I had planned for it to be more of an after movie type of video with limited amount of time after a discussion with Steve Davis we agreed a trailer would be more ideal and therefore I could focus on the quality, not quantity. I was in studio B on the computer which instantly I found premiere pro was easier to use than when on my mac book, the first  problem I encountered was that I was missing some footage of Oana and Sammy due to one of the cameras being out at the time, of recording, therefore, I had to make do with just the one camera for those two sets. I had 3 project tabs open one with all the footage including the camera audio one with all the footage and no camera audio and then an empty project for me to create my trailer with, I did this so that I could fetch footage and audio from each one and move it to the trailer tab  this avoids any confusion with what was my work and what was originally there.

step 1) I used some footage the film student had taken of the art to start the video with this was to show that everything was being filmed at an art event and sams guitar introduction playing behind this. Then following my research from week 7 I added text saying “arts show 2018” I did this by clicking on graphics on the top bar and the clicked basic title, this gave me a text box that when selecting the arrow tool I could move the text around to where I wanted it. I changed the font style to American typewriter and then enlarged it to 100% I also added a shadow by ticking the shadow box and then changed its colour to red. also following my research of Justin Odisho (week 7) I lowered the opacity of the text to 85.0%

step 2) next I added in Samantha’s first line of her song in this is because she was headlining the show and therefore will be most memorable to anyone who was watching I faded out the text and the introduction show footage into footage of Samatha playing me did this by clicking on effects and then video transitions and then used the cross dissolve effect, I dragged this to where I wanted it to fade out and then adjusted it by making it smaller so the fade didn’t last too long. I also added name tag down the bottom I did this the way I added text for the introduction I just made it smaller and put it in the corner, I also lowered the opacity to 80.0% this is so people dont focus on the text more than Samantha playing, the text then fades out around 6 seconds into the footage of her singing, below I have attached a picture of the introduction fading out into her play and you can also see the panel down the side which shows the directions to add a fade into the footage.

step 3) next I added Sammy’s footage and audio in, I chose a part of his set that I thought was recorded and sang well and then faded the footage in the same way I did for Samantha, I also added a name tag the same way for the same length of time and then faded it out. however this time I also needed to fade in his audio from Samantha’s I did this using the effects panel againand this time selected audio transitions, crossfade and then selected the constant power effect, which is highlighted because it is most commonly used by people, therefore, I decided to try it out, it worked well so I continued to use it for the rest of the musicians.

step 4) I added Oana’s footage and audio, I struggled to find a perfect piece to add because this was the one with only one camera for most of her performance, another problem was halfway through her set protols stopped recording for a few seconds, which was frustrating because the camera footage picked it up slightly and it seemed to be the best part of her set. therefore I had to compromise and find the best footage/ audio I could. I faded her audio and footage in the same way and also added her a name tag.

Step 5) next fins footage and audio got added and faded in the same way as the others plus a name tag. Fins set recorded quite well, therefore, I had no problem finding good footage with matching audio.

Step 6) After fin was angel, for angels set she was stood too far away from the mic for a lot of it and the beginning of her set one of the cameras hadn’t been adjusted and cut off most of her body leaving just her neck and head, therefore this caused a problem for me when it came to choosing her audio and footage. once I found the audio I felt was best I repeated the same steps as I did with the others of adding a name tag and fading the audio and camera footage in from the previous musician.

step 7) next was Jack Hawkins a problem I had with jacks was that his levels hadn’t been set correctly and there was constant feedback in the recording, I had originally picked out what I thought was one of the best parts of his set however then after listening to it again realised there was slight feedback this meant I had to look again for something with no feedback which I eventually found and then faded in along with the footage and name tag.

step 8) outro to end the trailer I used Samantha again with the final line of her first song which I faded in using the same steps as I did previously however instead of having a name tag as I had already done this for the beginning i decided to fade from one camera to the other as it ends I did this by adding the same dissolve effect onto the first camera and then it faded into the second, so it goes from being zoomed in to being zoomed out. Below is the final trailer.

Final evaluation

The show itself was pretty much what I expected, however, there was so much more to the process than I thought there would be and at times felt a bit out of my depth i.e auditions and learning premiere pro. I have never done anything like this before and therefore had a lot to learn in a short amount of time, I only had my research to base how it makes this show work on and of course help from my lecturer’s nick and steve. The first bits of research I did were how to run and organise auditions, This mostly taught me to be organised and prepared, so when it came to my first lot of auditions I followed my research and met with angel who I was collaborating with at the time an hour early to set up and check with the students what times they could do throughout the day, these auditions were very stressful and took up my whole day, presentations were also being held for the music students with nick and steve therefore this made some people late (my resrach can be seen in week 1). When it came to my second lot of auditions i researched into again and this time followed my research a lot more i sent out emails to explain when the auditions will be held and then sent another email when i had to cancel to say they were cancelled and the new date that they’d be held on. The next step to my auditions was the lineup, I then researched the best way to decide a lineup and also viewed some stories on why a line up is so important (this research can be seen in week 4). I also needed to research setting up a pa system which I have never used/set up before, I didn’t find the secondary research very useful however the primary research of shadowing Josh and Steve Harvey was very useful and I understood a lot more as I had someone to explain it. my secondary research consisted of basic microphone research and where the speakers/ monitors go. I feel that if I was to organise the show again id like to do a lot more secondary research with PA systems because even after my research I did not feel like I knew enough when it came to the show, I was still shadowing Josh a lot, I feel this was mostly fear of messing up technically with my own show, therefore, played it safe however if there had been more secondary research I would like to think I would be more confident (primary research can be seen in week 2, secondary is in week 5). Adobe premier pro was also new to me and needed researching, Adobe was something I struggled to use for a long time throughout my process it also took up a lot of my time with tutorials and the process of actually editing film footage at times I felt completely out of my depth however the more research I did the easier I found it therefore when it came to making my trailer I found it so much easier than when I first used it, I cant get the second one to upload to youtube however in all three videos my improvemnts are clear. I found a useful youtube channel under the name of Justin Odisho his videos were really short therefore I found them easier to get into and actually used a couple of his tricks from my research in my final trailer. (research can be seen in week 3 and 7). Overall i feel this project was successful as i collaborated with other students i.e musicians, film students and Angel for my auditions. This project also served a purpose throughout, all research primary or secondary all was being done for the same reason a successful how. both auditions held included critical listening i.e listening for faults and strengths within their performance. My project had two practical aspects to it one was learning about the PA system which i feel i have achieved in ways just not as much as id like to of, i would like to of come away from this project knowing exactly how to set up a PA system with little help however would say that I could set up a pa system to look correct and to have everything in place and microphones working, however, the amplifier and cables are something I am still unsure of and would need further help. The other practical aspect of my project was my Trailer, which I personally felt was successful, I aimed for it to be a bit longer than it was, however, I had a quality over quantity outlook on this and wanted to spend more time on having it look correct rather than be longer.

Risk asessment

Health and safety executive (2018) As part of managing the health and safety of your business, you must control the risks in your workplace. To do this you need to find the mazzard that might cause the arm to think of ways to prevent harm around your workers a. This is known as risk assessment and it is something you are required by law to carry out unless you have fewer than 5 employees. risk assessments are not about creating lots of paperwork but simply about identifying sensible measure to control risks in your workplace. something key to remember is the difference between risks and hazards, a hazard is anything that may cause harm, such as chemicals, electricity, working from ladders, an open drawer etc and a risk is the chance, high or low, that somebody could be harmed by these and other hazards, together with an indication of how serious the harm could be.

 

Health and safety direct (2018) A risk assessment is a systematic examination of a task, that you carry out so find the significant hazards your task includes, this could be the risk of someone being harmed or the risk of things going wrong. you will need to decide what further control measures you will take to reduce or prevent the risk. The steps to carrying out a risk assessment template are to identify the risk, identify whos at risk, how bad the outcome can be, how likely the risk is to happen and how to prevent it. you will need to keep copies of the risk assessment to look back on and update. You must ensure that the control measures are achieving the desired level of control. You must review the assessment on a regular basis or if anything changes i.e new staff or equipment then update your risk assessment. You have a legal duty to relay the findings of the assessment to everyone who could be affected by it.

 

music tech student (2018) In the music industry, for certain things you might be asked to complete a Risk assessment to identify any possible hazards or risks that could harm yourself or those around you working in the same environment. often the risk assessment is left to organisers, production managers or venue managers, however, for small events where your own or hired equipment is used you may need to know how to complete one. in your risk assessment, you will need to include the date of the event, location, what the event is, who is involved and who assessed the risks. you will then need to list the risks that could possibley happen, who they may affect, the likely hood of the risk happening and how to prevent or lower that risk.

 

ultrasound (2018) common risks in the live sound industry include Heavy Items/ equipment. Can they be carried an lifted safely? and how? what equipment may you need to transport equipment?, The electricity supply itself must be safe (i.e. earthed, breaker-protected, and not overloaded with plugs which can cause it to trip out. you should check for damaged casings, if screws are missing on the equipment covers this means the covers are not secure you should also check for damaged wires or pugs, if the inner insulation or bare wire is visible, do not use it just replace it. Don’t run cables on the floor and avoid letting them hang in open spaces. check for Uneven or sloping surfaces if the live event is outside stages may become slippery in bad weather conditions.

Show

Reflection

At 7:45 the show began starting with Oana, she sang if I were a boy by Beyonce just like in her audition, followed by Sammy with an original backing track, then fin playing an original song on the banjo. After fin was angel she also sang an original on the acoustic guitar, and then the show finished with sam playing one original song on the guitar and then two original with a backing track. The show itself was a success however behind the scenes there were a few technicals problems one being that halfway through Oana’s set one of the cameras cut out and wasn’t changed over until Sammy’s started. Another problem was the levels for jacks set weren’t quite right and the recordings have a lot of feedback, because of these two problems when I make the short film it might be hard to only be able to play with one camera for Oana’s set and finding parts of jacks set without feedback may be tricky. below I have attached a picture of what the stage looked like on the night, the stage had Samantha’s backdrop that she had made as she was headling the show.  Using my questionnaire I gathered some feedback which mostly consisted of parents of students performing, I would say the majority of the questionnaires came back positive and the question that asks if the artists showed originality within their sets and 20/30 of them came back saying yes I would agree with this as the only unoriginal song was right at the beginning, the rest of the show remained completely original. not many people added to the additional comments section, however, one comment made was “I came to the show because my friend was displaying her art exhibit but I can quite honestly say I stayed for the music all the musicians were very good at what they do. You could have used something to break it up a little (the girl at the beginning in the sparkly jacket for example). I really liked the backdrop for the show as well as I hadn’t seen anything like this before. The man adjusting the microphones did get fairly aggressive towards the acts at times so for future reference keep an eye if you use him again. Overall it was a fantastic show” I feel rather proud of this comment as it comes from someone with no relation to the music department at all, therefore, this shows that the musicians really did a good job with their sets from an outsiders perspective. below i have attached a picture of one of the questionaire papers at random

Stage manager role

Careers in music.com (2018) Stage Managers work behind-the-scenes to bring productions to life. They coordinate the logistics of performances, communicating with Artists and Directors to make sure their audio, lighting, and visibility needs are met. The Stage Manager is the head of the stage crew. A stage manager also helps coordinate the logistics of transportation, shipping, and customs when the performers by which they’re employed goes on tour a stage manager will travel with the musicians supervising and helping out with moving the symphony’s cargo onto trucks and into venues, making different pieces work on different stages.

S. marten (2018) Stage managers control all aspects of a live performance, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and to time. They usually work alongside stagehands or runners and may have an assistant or deputy. A stage manager has to be able to work as part of a large team including the artistic director, the production manager and sound/lighting technicians, checking the positioning of equipment on-stage e.g, mics or PA systems, Managing the dismantling afterwards, and ensuring that there are sufficient microphone channels. As stage manager, you will also have to attend all rehearsals and soundchecks to record precise timings for technical aspects such as sound and lighting for the musicians on stage, they will also need to have to deal with all problems that arise and ensuring that all requirements by musicians are met.

A. Mitchell (2018) A rehearsal sheet will provide a documented history for the stage manager of who showed up and when they showed up, this can reduce the stress of trying to work out if everyone has arrived on time. A performance sign-in sheet will allow the stage manager to register and archive attendance by cast and crew at all performances. Should a member of the cast and crew not attend or be late to a performance, the stage manager should immediately note it on this sheet, call the cast or crew member, then alert the understudy. All forms should be kept together in a binder or folder so that the stage manager can report back to the director and producer on castmember attendance. After the show wraps, the forms should be archived, which will especially be useful for making future casting decisions regarding punctuality and attendance.

a comprehensive cast and crew basic info form will provide you with all the necessary contact and basic medical information you’ll need on your production’s cast and crew members. Each cast and crew member should fill in one of these forms per production that they take part in this way it will always stay updated.

Reflection

Ive used the attached rehearsal sign-in sheet and printed it off so that all musicians could sign so i know everyone made it to soundchecks/rehearsals, i also have a health and safety form for each one to fill out individually and a show sign in sheet, my research teaches that these sheets will help me keep on track of who is at the show and if anyone is late, i will also need to print a Performer basic info sheet for each individual, so I have all basic information that is neccerary to know written down. The rehesral sheet will be sitting by the mixing desk and all performers will be asked to fill it in when they arrive and then the same for the actual show.

Soundchecks and rehearsals

Tuesday

On Tuesday afternoon we set up the stage down in the winter garden to do soundchecks and rehearsals, we brought everything down using trolleys this was to prevent anyone from hurting their backs lifting equipment (final risk assessment week 8), using my primary and secondary research of setting up a PA system Josh and I set up, starting with the stage, we then set up the mixing desk on a table next to the stage with my laptop plugged into the mixing desk with all the backing tracks in a playlist on iTunes. Next the front of house speakers were set up at the front of the stage theses are the speakers that the audience will hear the show from, the mointers go on the stage facing the musicians this is for them to be able to hear themselves and then we set up two microphones, one sm57 for the acustic guitars and one sm58 for vocals, all cables ran under the stage to the amplifire and mixing desk this was for health and safety, therefore no one can trip over the cables while performing below I have attached a photo of what the stage looked like when it was first set up.

Wednesday

soundchecks were held at 2 on Wednesday we started with Sam and her backing tracks however halfway through one song I encountered a problem that the vice principal was holding an awards meetings and the music was too loud so we had to postpone them until he was finished, this then created more problems because Oana had to go home and missed out on her soundcheck and rehearsal. At around 3:30 I was given the all clear to go on with the soundchecks which everyone apart from Oana could make, this meant her levels had to be set as she was doing her set in front of the audience. Soundchecks and rehearsals were successful. Fins took the longest because of him playing the banjo which is a really hard instrument to soundcheck however josh did an amazing job at it he showed me how to do it and how to set the gain on the mic with the master set 0 and then we were able to control the volume using only the master and wouldn’t need to touch the other dials. below i have attached the rehearsal sign-in sheet however it has the sign in times from where we had to stop halfway through, the professional thing to do would’ve been to print a copy and then have another sign in sheet for the new rehearsal/soundcheck time however at the time i did not think of this but it will be something that i will remember for next time. 

Meeting

Reflection

In Week 8 I had a final meeting with everyone, I spoke with everyone individually to double check everyone was still okay with their jobs, Film was all good and knew exactly what she needed to do and had planned it out. However, with the performers, there were a few last Last minute problems. One of the first problems I encountered in the last week before the show  was that on Monday Teide said she couldn’t play at the show due to having to work, Teide didn’t tell me directly it was a colleague that told me when i met with him, this has been rather frustrating as I had planned the order of each performance and now it has had to change last minute, Another change was that Fin Mowen from the first year also last minute decided he’d like to play, although he didn’t audition when the auditions were held he did show me a few recordings of him playing the banjo and considering Teide couldn’t make it anymore I discussed it with Nick and we came to the professional decision that he would be suitable to play, I decided that I will be putting his slot after Sammy so that way I could still keep all the acoustics together after he performed. Another problem I encountered was that on my proposal for some reason I had accidentally put an extra week in, im not sure how this happened but it meant for a few weeks I thought I had an extra week. I was lucky to have an empty week that I was going to use to catch up, therefore, I used this to shift everything back and put everything back onto the track. My proposal will remain saying that there is an extra week, however, I now know where I am at with the show.

 

 

 

 

Auditions cancelled

Auditions we scheduled for Tuesday this week however due to being ill Tuesday morning I had to change the date of them to the 29th of may this is when I could next get the TV studio booked for the day, everyone auditioning was made aware about this change and were given the new date. this now goes against my proposal as I have had to change the date of my auditions this means that the audition and line up process are behind and a lineup won’t be decided until the 29th. instead of the auditons, I decided to research music business and create a glossary that I can use to learn the appropriate language for this project. I also used this time to create and plan a questionnaire for my final evaluation piece.
